Medical Care in China from Canada: How It Works

Last updated: October 27, 2026

Two ways to access care in China

Canadians can plan medical care in China either by contacting a hospital's international department directly or by working with a coordinator. Star Matrix Health in Toronto, Ontario helps clients and their families organize records, find suitable specialists, plan travel and on-site support, and connect results back to their Canadian doctor.

You can contact an institution directly, or work with a coordination service that organizes records, communicates with specialist teams and helps plan travel. Star Matrix Health is a coordination service, not a hospital or clinic.

What we coordinate

Specialist access confirmed case by case; international second opinions and multidisciplinary review; records organization and translation; appointments, interpretation, transport and accommodation arrangements; on-site support and follow-up after you return home.

In Shanghai, we cooperate with local partners in the Lingang Special Area cross-border medical service network. In Boao Lecheng, Hainan, we work with local partners; our partner hospital there is a member of the Mayo Clinic Care Network. Network members are independently owned; Star Matrix Health is not affiliated with Mayo Clinic.

Entry rules, insurance and family travel

Canadian ordinary-passport holders may currently qualify for visa-free entry for up to 30 days for listed purposes through December 31, 2026. Medical treatment is not named in that list, and care may take longer than 30 days. Confirm requirements with the Chinese Embassy or a Consulate in Canada before booking.

Ask your provincial plan and insurer in writing what planned care abroad covers. Family members or an authorized representative can take part in decisions. Their accommodation, meals and travel are not included; we can help arrange them at the client's own cost.
